  1. NATO; or at least the US armed forces, will directly engage with the armed forces of the Russian Federation; it's only a matter of when and how. Whether we want to admit it or not, the war that Russia has initiated in Ukraine is not actually about Ukraine at all. That just happens to be the opening act. This is a war to recapture the territory of the ex-USSR, or at least most of it, and is also a war to project power and demonstrate resolve against the western alliances. It is also a war that will not end unless and until WE end it either by giving Ukraine what it needs to do the job or going in and doing it ourselves. As unpleasant as that might seem, it's the truth and the sooner we come to terms with it, the better.
