Speaking from experience: Discipline and Rules are good in school. Because of bad behaviour by students, standards are bad in many schools in my nation. Individualism is worshipped along with egotism. Despite a lot of ignorant comments here, Japan has a working system that creates overall a harmonious society. Yes young people will find it burdensome (Mendokusai) - but as you get older, trust me, the sheer lack of civility of people around other people starts to make the society you live in, you realize how low quality it really is while all the while you were constantly told about how "free" it is. I would now exchange that to live in Japan where they run things well and people are civil in public.

@hopeintruth5119 In general schools are as much (and in some nations) more about Social transformation of the students as they are about Education via Academic "performance". That's a huge reason why there's so much diversity in school methods across the world and why if you find a successful system in one nation you can't simply transplant it to another nation and expect it to be the same because a lot of it depends on the actual original CULTURE ! In Japan Discipline being high (whether anyone had a given opinion on this or not) is a big part of their culture. Cue school environment and cue in adult life how many people always comment on how civil in public life the Japanese behave. Input -> Output.
