"Freedom" is as much about "Selfishness" or "Individualism" as it's genuinely about "Self-Expression". The former often end up negative to an orderly well-run society (eg see the West and the latest tirades by people in public usually on tweeter) whereas the latter is good for people albeit in Japan people are totally free to do what they please in private being the other half of their social order. I look at the people in the West who promote tattoos: Celebrities, Sports Stars and Gang or Prison people. The former want the edgy image of the latter then in turn that looks "glamorous" to kids who then adopt these fads which is negative imho for role-models for people to emulate. Serious people doing serious work should be put up as role-models: Business Leaders, Scientists etc. They're not selling their image-copyrights to kids, but producing for society. The few exceptions I'd say are: Sub-Culture groups: Again Japan is fine with that eg GYARU Style or else with Westerns Maori Tribal Cultural that is traditional! I appreciate if the above views don't match your own, but this is sharing information with you. I'm very much in favour of the Japanese approach given the observed trends in the West and equally the different way Japanese organize their culture and society to work for themselves. The West imho is excessive individualism and it's negative for schools, negative for civic spaces and behaviour of people (so many video clips of people arguing or fighting in public etc). Bad service in retail and so on. I was in Japan and it was impressive how much they care about being harmonious in public crowded places. I prefer that ethos.
