Because the vast majority of those with student loans aren't the elite. Most of those jobs don't necessarily pay that well, especially with the burden of the remaining student loans.

@randysmith9841 And if you're saying this generation, then you're full of crap. You benefitted from tuition that was subsidized to a much greater degree than what it is now. Back in the '80s it was still possible to pay for college by working a summer job. By the time I first attended college in the late '90s it had gotten to the point where a 4 year degree cost per year, what a 2 year degree does now. Not to mention that books quadrupled in price since the '80s. The underlying costs do need to be addressed, but blaming the students for it is rather ridiculous. There have been multiple life changing economic events over that time frame.

@yagballs676 Because there are some jobs out there that require degrees and pay well enough to pay the loans. There just aren't enough of them to go around.

@charles-y2z6c yep, I work at a grocery store and nobody really cares about who donates. If you don't want to, for whatever reason, don't. It's not like you'd be the only one to say no that day. The checker is typically far too busy to invest much concern being l beyond ringing things up.

@yagballs676 And how pray tell, do you know that ahead of time? That's a huge part of the problem, people do get these jobs, they exist, how does somebody considering college know if they will or not? It's never a 100% fill rate.

Except it does belong to the tax payers, why do you think college suddenly became unaffordable over the last couple decades, it's because the tax payers stopped properly subsidizing it.

They're talking about $10k, that's hardly the whole thing and considering how much ground people lost due to the pandemic, it should be more. Also keep in mind that much of the debt is due to the government not funding it properly. If we funded it as much as we did 30 years ago, there'd be no need to wipe any of it.
