@jlcole300 That sort of thing is why there should just be a payment that goes out to everybody to help support the kids. It's kind of rough for the childless, but those kids don't automatically grow into upstanding citizens, so even for the childless there is something for them in doing so.

@Cometcast12 That assumes they can still afford an attorney and ultimately the judge won't necessarily recognize the change as being significant enough to warrant a change. The amount that courts are allowed to garnish for such things is a lot, mostly because father's get tossed under the bus in order to try to protect the kids.

@ferrisbueller9991 Automatic, is probably a bit much, but it should just be a matter of submitting a copy of an unemployment application or the previous year's tax return with an appropriate form indicating that it's being filed under relevant perjury penalties. This is after a court has already done an initial round, so there shouldn't be any significant assets that weren't either already disclosed or his outright, this is just about changes in income now.

@XYZ-kb3mm Does it? There's plenty of men that would want the responsibility, but can't because they're stuck with other things like earning a living when the mother can't earn as much. If these women don't want that, there's frequently a father that would be happy to get the custody.
