I'm not really sure that it's true. From the silent era onward there have been a great deal of movies that are from Europe that aren't just art house fodder. I think the issue tends to be in distribution. There have always been difficulties in taking home media between Europe and the US. TVs used to be PAL and NTSC, which were different enough that you had to have an appropriate TV or pay for expensive transfer. And when DVDs came out, there were artificial restrictions in terms of region locking. There are a great deal of European movies and TV shows these days that typical Americans would find to be very familiar and enjoyable, it's just that they don't normally get distributed here. I went so far as to flash the firmware on my optical drive because I outright couldn't watch any of that stuff without owning a bunch of different drives.

@Siranoxz Yep, keep in mind that several European countries natively speak major languages. German, French and Spanish in particular are some of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. And then there's English that does or doesn't count depending upon whether or not you consider it to be in Europe.

At the time yes, although these days, you can do a lot with sound stages and most major movies are filmed in part on location.

@anotherfreakingaccount Seattle hardly gets any rain compared with many other major cities. It's the distribution of the rain that sets it apart.
