  1. 3.5mm jacks aren't obsolete and the only reason why use them rather than the previous 5mm jacks was that they're too small for portable applications. But the older 5mm jacks are more durable. Perhaps someday somebody will come up with something better, but the only phones don't need to be any thinner and we don't need the inferior and expensive replacements.
