  1. That was true, but modern automatics have up to 9 gears available for matching. I don't doubt that in the past when the number of gears available was the same or similar that manual transmission yielded better fuel economy, but these days an automatic has more gears with better mechanisms down than in the past. But, you are dead on about fun. Manual is definitely more fun.
