Keep in mind that Spirit air has a business model where you can avoid nearly all those fees and pay practically nothing for the flight. That's how budget carriers work, you just pay for the stuff you use. Also, the flights I've had with them have been some of the most pleasant flights I've had recently. Ditto for the other budget airline that escapes my memory that I took a few years ago. Sure, they make the nickling and diming more obvious, but at least the fares are quite cheap if you don't need that stuff.

And many people don't have the option at all. If somebody in the NW wants to go to Universal Studios Orlando or Disney World, you're looking at an entire week of driving, most people don't have the vacation time to even consider that, and the train isn't necessarily much better.

Have you flown recently? It's absolutely terrible. The seats are too small and you have to be sexually assaulted to be allowed to take the flight at all. I flew when I was a kid and it was a generally pleasant experience. I was too small to really be impacted by seat sizes, but the process was far better. What's more, flying overseas is also far better than what we have here as well.

That's also why the TSA gets away with the blatantly illegal security screenings because apparently we all have other options. I have relatives that live thousands of miles away, it's simply not viable to use any other method of travel to see them and definitely not on super short notice like for a funeral.
