I've been saying for years that the President shouldn't get to choose anybody they like to nominate and the Senate shouldn't be allowed a decision about whether or not to hold a vote on the confirmation. The Senate should be required to have hearings and to have an up or down vote for any nominee that doesn't withdraw. And the President should only be permitted to select from a list of potential nominees that a bipartisan committee has chosen as possibilities. That wouldn't solve the problem completely, but it would go a long ways towards preventing situations like Garland not getting a vote and jokes like Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh from being seated on the bench. Kavanaugh is a particularly egregious example as he was caught perjuring himself during his confirmation hearing. That alone should have been grounds for him to not be confirmed.
