Well "tomcatting around" is a old timey like 1930s way of saying a guy was out drinking with the guys and possibly trying to pick up women in US English you would like have a pissed off wife or GF scolding her man for being out on the town tomcatting around when he comes home all hungover the next morning in like old movies. I wonder if the two are possibly related terms and don't even know it.
