Ian McGuinness They had no option but to carpet bomb.

The British put a 6-pdr anti-tank gun in Mosquitoes for anti-U-Boat work. It worked well sinking the odd U-Boat. It was superseded quickly by rockets, which had the equiv' of a cruisers broadside when all fired together.

misium The civilians were in areas which were legitimate targets. Bombing accuracy was so poor they had no option but to carpet bomb around the targets, to ensure they got it. Even so, in July 1943 the razing of Hamburg creating the firestorm killed 42,600 and wounding 37,000. So if 5 German cities were razed to end the war that would be approx: 213,000 killed and 185,000 wounded. A small price to pay to save millions of lives. After all they started the war.

Yes the bomber offensive was correct. If all resources were given to the RAF and the USAAF Germany would have no option but to surrender. The idiots kept fighting for another two years. In 1943 The RAF razed Hamburg. Speer said a few more then they would have to surrender. Western allies were fearful of the Soviets holding all the ground if they won in the air. That means Soviets on the Channel coast. The west needed boots on the ground, although they could have won it in the air. Allied air power was so powerful Montgomery said the southern front, on the southern France - German border, could have been secured by aircraft alone, with a minimal ground force - he wanted, like Churchill Operation Dragoon to be a push into Austria via Italy, instead of wasting men needlessly.

@purplefood1 Mainly aircraft and it was not laughable. Whole ground units surrendered to fighter-bombers. Montgomery knew what he was talking about.

@nickhambly8610 How confusing.

@andrewblake2254 Many say the bombing of Dresden was more for the benefit of the Soviets, as they were not that far away. Then they saw the power of allied bombing when they walked into the city. But that is bollocks. Dresden was 13 to 15 February 1945. The western allies had not even got over the Rhine by then. Operation Plunder started on 23 March, five weeks later. They were still launching V2 on the UK and Antwerp. The last V2 launched was on 27 March 1945 hitting Orpington in Kent. Dresden was a legitimate target. No one was making them fight on.
