IDK about the youngins, but, Most Americans KNOW the meaning and feel the weight, of this song. Its bravery, determination and its humanity is felt whether it was the Revolution, the Civil War, World Wars, Vietnam, the Gulf War... Americans will Not Give up, we will Not Surrender to Tyrants!
"Americans will die on their feet before they live on their knees." -Washington
Ya don't really Have to know the story behind the (much longer) poem that Key wrote because, each generation has faced the storms and we KNOW how precious our Freedoms are.
Hearing the anthem played at events with crowds singing along, is Powerful. It humbles ya and makes one proud.
They would sometimes bring a Bald Eagle, trained to entertain, and set him free to fly once around a stadium, over the people! At one event, he defied his trainer by flying around again and again, cheered on by the fans. Whether he just wanted a little more Freedom to Fly or he was uplifted by the energy of The People, or both, who knows... but, it was Magical!
The Eagle did return to his perch and was retired not long after. He spent YEARS doing this stunt. It's kinda sad in ways but, his presence, his willingness, his Wings Lifted others!
The Star Spangled Banner gives me a sinking in my tummy when I hear it. Chills up my spine, a lump in my throat, goosebumps on my skin, tears to my eyes and a pounding in my heart. Even if, for just a moment, Every time! Singing the song, itself, is a challenge and many singers have been brave enough to perform it before thousands. But, when people join in, if some mess up, if they are tone deaf, even if they faulter, the rest of us will help in picking it up and carrying everyone through, to the end!
