@Unknowngfyjoh I'm glad to hear you had no problems. But it's completely inundated with gangs in their culture, statistics will go up and down, but I would be wholeheartedly shocked if it became the safest in LATAM or one of.
They simply don't have the same culture, stability, laws, ability to enforce them as the anglo countries or rather ones stemmed from the British Empire. In Mexico now w/ partner (native here). The land of the frito bandito as Doug Casey puts it.
Its probably (mexico) most similar to the Wild Wild West days or the hippie days of California in 60s. Now Mexico is unique, but it's still in the region, & what made Dubai and Singapore financial power homes seem to be rule of law. I'm extremely skeptical that given its history, financial vulnerability, culture and current economic situation reliant on massive gangs that it (El Salvador) will attract that reputation. They 'just' made their bond payments.
Cracking down on gangs is surface level stuff, which is fine if you have small exposure or do little trips. But setting up shop, big investments, big properties, land, starting a family, 'very safe' is relative surely. If you go again I'd be interested to hear from more locals from the guy who you were paying in a car. Consider the fact too that you're a money man in their eyes, its not feasible or attractive to fuck with you, but its fair game for locals. Having said that, just like in LATAM, there 'are' very safe areas of El Salvador but everything I just said refers to the entire nation & think over a period of time, things revert to the mean.
