Martijn Kösters Again, Type R stands for Racing. It's effective... For a poncy "pretend" hot hatch you can get a GTI.

5:50 Wow, the mazda's inside wheels are nearly off the ground! :)

Spoiler: Megane RS 47.1sec Hyundai i30N 46.8sec Civic Type R 45.8sec

It's a sportscar but so is the miata... :)

derbigpr500 Blah blah, Mechanical Engineer here too. ;) Civic Type "R" -- R stands for Racing, it's *supposed* to a be a track car you can buy from a dealership -- a simple watch of the heritage of Type Rs on Best Motoring will tell you all need to know about this. On the other hand, "M" is supposed to stand for Motorsport yet it doesn't and isn't -- BMW fans need to wait for a CSL edition to get the proper real deal track ready car from the dealership... The Audi and BMW are more luxury cars, which is fine, but they carry those "M" and "RS" that make people assume they are track cars, when they really aren't, they're just fast fairly sporty luxury road cars...

True. But Steve makes the point that the Clubsport is more fun than the R, so if you're buying a hot hatch to have fun, steering response, liveliness etc, then that's the pick! Who cares which car has more traction or accelerates faster in a straight line? The GTI and Leon are both fast "enough" for that.

Vonslik69 The Evora S paddleshift is a slush box (torque conveter), right?
4
A good, fair review. Not dwelling so much on the engine. :)
4
It's got 4 doors!

I'm not sure about this ducktail spoiler IMO. The ducktails look great on the old 911s, but it doesn't really fit the 991's lines. It sticks out like a sore thumb and spoils (pardon the pun) the smooth styling of the rear end of the 991 IMO. This ducktail is too big really, a more subtle one would look better. :)

+mistreku Yes, that's the point. Stats are already available elsewhere.

+Paul Hofierka Corners?

/Dream Car Garage 1 (DCG1) " Now which one will you go for? " Exactly, you get the Honda because it's a honda and therefore reliable and you know it will still be setting hot laps with ease in 15 years time.

mrd88888 It's true! (Subaru owner here!)

Garden of Harmony The E30 is classic made for driving and stirring the soul. The 320D is a boring diesel appliance.
2
nizmojoeblows It does look stiff, but this has been the traditional JDM way if you have seen any of Spoon's tuned Civics ;)... Anyhow the dampers can be softened in normal mode, so it's not soooo bad.

If you are from the UK, it likely rains a lot! Here in southern Australia or, say, in southern California, 3/4 of the year is quite dry and warm. People have different views. I would always prefer the Megane RS, or the GTI Clubsport, or the Type R as I think they are more exciting than the AWD models. I had an AWD WRX and I did not like it, it was too easy IMO, YMMV of course! 🙂

Don't forget things that don't apply to the Japanese price: no CO2 road tax (£1470 for the Civic Type R's polluting 200g CO2/km bracket), no 10% import tariff due to being made outside EU, no 20% VAT (sales tax is 10% in Japan -- so that's ~32% total tax in the UK since VAT is charged on top of import tariff, versus 10% in Japan). Regardless satisfying the Japanese Domestic Market is Honda's priority hence the more reasonable price and the 10,000 Japanese orders being preferentially filled (compared to very limited export allocation).
2
"Aren't type r are supposed to be driven hard on the track out of the factory?" They are, hence the stiffer suspension to handle modern ever grippier track day tyres, that people are complaining about!
2
In the UK, there is a CO2 tax on new cars (which is £1470 pounds or $1800 USD for the Civic Type R's 200g CO2/km bracket) as well as a 10% import tariff on cars imported from Japan and a 20% VAT tax on cars.

+Aaron Blankenship and you lose power.... So not a great idea!
2
+yinimini mo They are just saying the Cayman is more polished and finished. The 4C has errors in many small details, which let done the overall concept which is otherwise very good. I don't understand why the engine is 1.6T and not 2.0T for example?
2
the gla45 is better. just as fast and more practical. :)
2
I'm not James, but Bierman worked for M from 1983 to 2014 and developed the E30 M3 through to the F82 M4.
2
***** Who says the Cayman is more enjoyable? The Cayman is really too fast for ordinary roads... all the potential with little chance to use it while keeping your license. On the other hand, you can use all the performance of the Fiesta ST on every drive.
2
+Carlitox b What's the point of a sportscar that you don't wind out to high rpm to make it go? :/
2
How about the Nissan 370Z Nismo? That is focused and RWD, and relatively affordable -- it's only a little more expensive than a Civic Type R or Golf R (apart from perhaps in the EU, where it suffers tariffs from being imported from outside of Europe). Once a car has more power, then it needs upgraded driveshafts, brakes, suspension arms etc and (unfortunately) it is inevitably going to weigh 1500kg+ like the 370Z or a BMW M240i.
2
The Honda's styling is a logical development of the styling of the 2010 Mugen Civic Type R and 2015 Civic Type R. It makes perfect sense if you understand the history of the current styling.
2
DaveClass47 Yup, M cars a class above --- they are too luxurious and boring... it's very capable but there's no excitement unless you are doing some outrageous illegal speeeds. Type R for me, I like a car that's fun and silly *all the time* including at road legal speeds. :)
2
Mini - Only 189hp from a 2.0L turbo!? That's ridiculous - sounds like it's detuned on purpose to leave room for go-faster versions. The Fiesta ST gets more from a 1.6. Are they having a laugh, for example: Megane 2.0 265bhp, Focus 2.0 260ish bhp?, WRX 2.0 265 bhp - and those cars aren't that aggressively tuned anyway. And we know the Polo GTI is detuned. Strange :/ Also, cool that the Mini comes in a 5-door nowadays. BMW certainly maximising Mini production.
2
That's true. Yet strangely VW has a tyre lottery system where the Mk8 Golf GTI and R come on one of three summer tyres: Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Sport, Bridgestone Potenza S005A (Auto Express say Potenza Sport for the R, so maybe this has changed) or Hankook Ventus S1 evo3. So you don't even know which tyre you will get.
2
+ianiva They are not much quicker, they are about the same. AWD is only much faster from standing start. Power to weight ratio of Civic Type R and Focus RS is nearly the same, so in-gear performance is more or less equal.
2
+boy638 Presenter's accent is COOOOL! :)
2
Paul Hofierka I see. Personally, I don't think it is possible to use the acceleration of a quick car often without attracting the wrong kind of attention (anti-social driving laws as such), thereby only using some of the revs and part throttle and that's "plenty fast enough". Hence, I would rather use 100% of the performance of a more modest car, more often.
2
derbigpr500 Rubbish - totally wrong.
2
Samzilla The next model; with the same basic engine, gearbox and front suspension anyway :)
2
They aren't sportscars, they are hatchbacks!
2
Alexandre Fernandes Type R means R for Racing. ;) No poncy pretender's car like a Golf GTI....
2
***** The Focus and Civic have the same Power to Weight ratio. It's not a matter of the Focus having more power, as it also weighs more.
2
Leo Phan Specifically stiffer=the car reacts faster to driver inputs as natural frequencies are higher. This is usually desired for a "race car". A softly sprung car can still handle OK, but the reaction time to inputs will be slower. Sometimes softer is required to keep the tyres in good contact with the road, softer actually gives more grip in theory. It depends. Relatively firm is good IMO. :)
2
+BlueAxeRacer Yup you're wrong. Like she said the FN2 had increased mid-range torque and "1 hp more" (despite being fitted with balance shafts that cost about 15 hp, so it would otherwise be up on power compared to the EP3), lower vtec engagement point, much lower final drive ratio (5.0 vs 4.7), and also later FN2s had the JDM-spec Torsen differential. So the FN2 is actually not necessarily as slow compared to a Euro-spec EP3 as you might think (JDM spec EP3 is another matter of course).
2
It's as if someone has attacked the car with the smudge tool from photoshop. :)

The hood is the wrong colour too, it should be tan to match the interior! (the interior which is lovely by the way) :)
1
I supposed they didn't have time (or owner's approval) to flog it on a circuit...

Great video!

Good job presenter! :)

Not sure if serious....

古翰霖 lol

Stanley Park It's the same size bodyshell... even the chassis code is the same as the previous model :) Strangely the wagon has the same chassis code too.... (FK2....)

Jostein Holen Why the heck do you need seat ventilation for!? Alcantara is far better.
