The IJN did chronically underestimate submarines, but they were well aware of what air attacks would do: as I've pointed out earlier they focused on trying to prevent air attacks in the first place due to their belief airstrikes couldn't easily be stopped (which ended up being a self-fulfilling prophecy), hence their issues with AA. Also, while I do believe the Japanese assumed the 25mm was better than the 20mm, I'm going to need sources for them assuming the same with the 40mm Bofors (especially as they actually did attempt to produce the 40mm).

Samar wasn’t really consequential in the grand scheme of things: even if the Japanese won they would have been too late to achieve their objective anyways. And it wasn’t really anywhere near as much of a David vs. Goliath situation as commonly assumed to be.

@blakekirk5009 You do realize there is only one ship in Centre Force that can fight the American fast battleships?

Blake Kirk Radar would be an advantage, but not for the reason often given (that of better accuracy at long ranges of 30,000+ yards, which isn’t realistic based on peacetime tests for the 16”/50 gun with radar targeting); the real advantage would be that as things were foggy at Samar, radar wouldn’t be affected in the way optics are. Yamato MIGHT be able to fight effectively (compared to the other Japanese vessels) by repurposing data from her search radar for targeting purposes, but the others probably can’t do even that. Yamato might be able to engage two NorCals or SoDaks on her own, but that would still be a serious problem; against an Iowa she only has a chance when facing one of them at a time (and even then Iowa probably has a slight advantage due to mobility). Then again, there’s only one Iowa-class involved in this hypothetical engagement. The Long Lance was a great torpedo but even it struggled to hit things at ranges over 10,000+ yards (not saying other torpedoes would have done any better).

Tomáš Kyseľ Poor Bismarck.

Thankfully (for them) they realized the issue pretty quickly.

Bad naval myths.....there are so many involving WWII-era battleships, but then I’d be saying the same stuff I’ve said elsewhere in this channel.

Albeit the caliber difference between them and the main battery was so large that they in no way qualified as predreadnoughtsz

Frank DeMaris WHAT??

@kemarisite Thanks.

@blakekirk5009 Source? It wouldn't surprise me seeing as she was much more accurate than other IJN battleships at Samar, but still. Everything I've heard only indicates the use of search radar.
