Farious Marious Their dependence on highly trained DamCon specialists screwed them over.

If this thing went up against every WWII battleship, I would pity the battleships.

Andrew Beers The pilots would make a much better improvement than the AA, given that even American AA was far less effective than CAP.

@thorin01 The Japanese would still have lost at Leyte Gulf. By the time the Battle off Samar began, the window of opportunity for attacking the American landings was already closing. The Japanese would have arrived too late and failed to do anything. The whole idea Leyte could have been a military disaster for the Americans is nonsense and based on outdated/inaccurate secondary sources and incorrect assumptions about the vulnerability of the landing forces to Centre Force. And this isn't getting into the fact that the fight at Samar was a lot less one-sided than often made out to be. Taffy 1 and 2 were also involved in the battle (via air attacks, which country to popular belief did actually have some anti-ship munitions), and they were not under attack by Centre Force. And the Standard battleships from Surigao were already moving north to intercept by the time Kurita retreated (which was actually a smart move, at least in hindsight). The absolute best-case scenario for the Japanese is that they get to the beaches, find that it's too late to do anything, and retreat in failure without accomplishing their objectives. So Halsey keeps his job, because nothing would have happened to the US landings anyways due to the Japanese being a few hours too late. MacArthur wouldn't be crying for blood, not when the Japanese are too late to ruin his moment.

Jesus Christ For the vessels that are most commonly assumed to be examples of such (Axis battleships in WWII), it should be noted that the Allies also built their own pointless battleships, initially out of the false belief battleships were still necessary and particularly useful, then because of what appears to be a willful ignorance of the fact battleships had been obsolete even by the start of WWII: that was a case of everyone being stupid.
