I would honestly disagree about the idea of BBs being better even in early 1940. Yes, aircraft still had all their problems....but that doesn’t change the fundamental advantage of carriers, which is that they are invulnerable to being shot at by the BBs they are attacking. Even later in the war, things like volume of fire and durability favoured BBs, but that factor of range made every battleship advantage irrelevant.
