How viable would it be to stage an elaborate hoax to create a fake capital ship to use it as a fleet in being?

Arthur Grant DamCon is more a feature of the crew, rather than a feature of the ship itself. The reason American damage control was so effective had mostly to do with their DamCon doctrine (where every sailor knew basic DamCon) than with ship design. Not saying American ships were badly made, but an American ship with Japanese crew would be terrible at DamCon, while a Japanese ship with American crews would be far better at it. For this reason I personably don’t think DamCon should be taken into account when comparing two ships on a design basis. DamCon is a perfectly reasonable way to judge crew skill or naval doctrine, but not the vessels themselves.

Exospray Because firing the main guns on any battleship suppresses the other guns, thus actually reducing the amount of firepower directed at planes

David Edens He already has an Enterprise video.

Luke Skywalker Yes. However, due to that exact reason, the USN was NOT going to attack Japan immediately even before they realized the value of carriers. Read War Plan Orange.

You pretty much have part of the reason; it’s impossible to properly armour a ship against a missile.

Even the Japanese civilians didn’t know that those two ships ever existed until well after the war. When details of the ships are kept in such secrecy that a few minor details are still unknown even decades later, you can’t expect anyone to know the actual firepower of these vessels.

wcweathe After the war when they got hold of the few documents that Japan didn’t put to the torch.

Science Chap The capital ships were fine in bad weather (one of the few things they got right), but Kriegsmarine destroyers were infamously unstable.

That Denmark Straits flub..... On a serious note that would be actually interesting; let’s replace Bismarck with another Axis vessel that’s not only bigger, but better-designed overall and see how long it takes for the RN to take her down.
