@Captain_Seafort The US would probably do worse, whether they actually lose depends on which battleship of the two is the one that's missing.
If Washington was there, she'd do worse due to Kirishima not being distracted, but would probably still prevail.
If SoDak is there....then that's a major game-changer for that battle. The stupid idea to tape the circuit breakers together is still in play and SoDak will thus go without power this time as well, meaning that despite being the superior combatant she can't do anything. The reason Kirishima didn't do major damage to SoDak was mostly due to the fact she only had the Type 3 shells (for shore bombardment) available initially, then got jumped by Washington before she could switch to AP. In this case that's not a problem, and Kirishima is going to have sufficient time to switch to AP and actually inflict major damage (much as Taffy 3 and Taffy 1 started off at Samar throwing whatever they had on their planes at that time, but switched over to aerial torpedoes and other actually dangerous weapons during the engagement), which may end with SoDak being put out of action for months, or even permanently. That said, in the grand scheme of things SoDak's potential loss isn't going to help the Japanese much, what with WWII being a carrier affair in the Pacific and a submarine/land-based aircraft affair in Europe.
