Bold statement to make immediately following being shown evidence that the narrative surrounding the poor performance of declining industries is historically inaccurate.

You not being able to understand the financial literature doesn’t mean that it is ‘mental gymnastics’. Also Ben has never referenced his personal portfolio. Nobody has any clue how it is performing , nor does it matter. The performance of a single portfolio isn’t basis for anything.

I would say you’re not as well diversified as you think. Don’t think you’ll find much support here for investing in individual stocks. You are likely far better off investing in a total market index fund.

You’re not wrong but you’re mentioning things that the market knows and this should be reflected in prices. A good company is not the same thing as a good investment and a bad company is not the same thing as a bad investment. At any rate Ben never advocates for investing in individual companies or targeting specific sectors - he was merely using historical fact to highlight a point here. As always you are probably better off in broadly diversified index funds and if you have an appetite for more risk perhaps you can consider overweighting small cap value stocks within thjs well diversified portfolio as well.

Not necessarily. Market cap of industries is also related to the number of companies within the in industry. As more competition enters an industry , the industry can grow but the profits / margins of individual companies can lag. It’s a similar story when you look at countries gdp growth and compare it to stock market returns for that country.

@xYoungDeezYx well gunna need more evidence than that. Past returns are not evidence for future returns.

Predicting what technology will change the world is different than picking which company delivering that technology will win the most market share before that info is priced into the stock

If I were to take a guess I would say it’s because busiensss in those industries are typically riskier - its those industries as a whole that outperformed , but many individual companies in those industries went out of business.
