When Nazi Germany conquered France in 1940 the French were going to allow Germans to use their ships (hence the U.K. 🇬🇧 attack in Algeria to destroy the French ships before the Germans could get them) De Gaulle escaped to safety in London in 1940. In 1944 de-Gaulle expressed little gratitude if any to the hundreds of thousands of British, Canadian and American troops who had fought and died to liberate France.
