  3. In spite of the fact that the homicide rate overall is low in Switzerland (.7 compared to U.S. 4.6), in 2010, 40 of the 53 homicides in the country were by firearms. Even though the incidence of gun violence in Switzerland is low, there is a growing movement for more gun control. So far, the movement has failed at the polls--most recently the vote was 57% against--but it doesn't appear to be going away.

In Switzerland firearm regulations have tightened considerably, and while the number of guns per capita is high in Switzerland(45.7 per 100 residents and third after the U.S.), it is still only about half that of the U.S. (88.8 per 100 residents). Note that these are 2007 figures and that the rate has been going up in the U.S. over the last few years.
