  1. DEBT lesson for Armando the Dim... Unfortunately, Republicans never learn from history. We've had three decades to determine whether or not tax cuts for the rich help our economy. They don't. Even tax cuts for the rest of us only help it marginally. And Republicans think spending cuts help in a recession and will do something for the deficit. This is new for them since Republican administration have always promoted more spending during recessions, especially government hiring. But this is only when there's a Republican in the White House. When there's a Democrat in the White House, all of a sudden deficits are terrible and the debt that they built up during their term is a disaster that's all the Democrats' fault. It's a scam! I just wish their millions of followers could see this. If tax cuts for the rich helped our economy and created jobs, we would be at full employment by now. In fact, there would be so many jobs, we'd be begging the retired people to come out of retirement and fill them. We'd be begging for more immigration so we could get more people filling all those jobs. Companies would be desperate to get enough workers, and wages would have skyrocketed, not stagnated and even declined as they have on average for the past 33 years. What does it take for these people to face reality? They just keep marching in lockstep with this strange and selfish ideology without ever seeming to consider that the results of their actions actually hurt people, kicking them off the rolls of the employed and causing them to descend into poverty. This is not promoting the general welfare or insuring domestic tranquility, which "conservatives" tend to ignore even though they're right there at the beginning of the Constitution among the purposes for having a government. Are we a caring government or not? And which party seems to care more than the other about what actually happens to those in need? I think these are important questions to ask. Republican policies are geared towards helping only the rich. To pretend otherwise is to ignore reality.

Roughly speaking and ignoring other variables, our debt would be $9 trillion less than it is today if corporate tax revenue had averaged 3.7% of GDP over the last 32 years as it did from 1950 to 1980 instead of the 1.7% it did average. (counting lower interest payments on the debt). Our debt would be another $6.5 trillion less if the 1% had paid 38% after deductions as they did in 1980 over the last 32 years instead of the 23% they did. (again counting lower interest paid on the debt) - they earned $29 trillion over this period. GDP grew more from 1950 to 1980 than it has since and average real incomes doubled versus remaining flat since 1980.

  4. DEBT Household Anyone who buys a car or a house with a down payment & "low monthly" loan is guilty of deficit spending. (Or, keeps a running credit card balance.) Why the deficit-scolds believe the nation should be run any differently is beyond me. Oh wait-- they don't actually believe that. It's just another useful ruse to scare the low-fact amongst us into agreeing with their real agenda: convince the populace to vote against their own self-interest & put the GOP in power, then, in the name of "small government" they'll fire any remaining referees throwing flags on the capitalist game (the regulators), and let the neo-robber-barons run things with their selfless benevolence as large amounts of taxpayer cash disappears into S&L bailouts (Reagan years) bank bailouts (Bush era policies) and their general business-as-usual graft, corruption, and collusion (Cheney / Halliburton / Iraq billions anyone?) ... It's just like it's becoming 1775 all over again, and all the stuff those founder-dudes thought up to forestall a return to monarchy / oligarchy has been, essentially, defeated...
