If you can only cover the interest payment. You’ve been using credit, to pay for consumables. (Like cars, or bad investments). Eventually you have to face the music. We have been running ever larger deficits for 70 years.

@bloodgout Same thing, on a large scale. If your tax base, (income), can not and will not service your debt, and obligations. You are not a good risk, for my money. So I will no longer lend to you. Unless the interest rate compensates for the risk, of default, or currency debasement. (servicing the debt means, principal and interest).

@foleylione The best way, was to invest in productive capacity. Let dead companies fail. To not have corporate lobby groups, steer the budgets, into their pockets. Not subsidizing Chinese shipping rates, respecting human rights over there. It is never too late, to start to turn things around. But as you know, the longer you leave it, the harder it is. Every time the economy is headed for a cleansing, it is diverted with helicopter money, and lower interest rates. Till it no longer works. Making the eventual meltdown bigger.
