The fed raised interest rates to try to stop high inflation. A significant part of the recent inflation was due to companies raising prices. See record earnings at many companies to back this up. Windfall profits and other corporate tax raises would have been much better to combat inflation, but that is a politically toxic thing to do, at least in the USA where our politicians are paid for by large corporations. So we ended up with high inflation which hurt consumers plus higher interest rates which hurt consumers. Rich people did astronomically well during the pandemic.
