  2.  @Mentol_  The purge absolutely affected the performance of the army, as did Stalin's meddling during battles, such as at Kiev. He did not let his frontline commanders take the initiative.

Out of an estimated 75,000-80,000 military officers, 34,000-54,700 were purged. 80% of corps and divusional commanders and 91% of regimental commanders, deputies and chiefs of staff were removed or worse. -Glantz and House, "When Titans Clashed: How the Red Army stopped Hitler," second edition, 2015, page 9.

  6.  @objectivistathlete  The Purge and political loyalty over merit definitely played a huge role. I always refer to marshal of the USSR Kulik. He was against mechanisation, the use of minefields and modernisation if the artillery. He was totally unfit for his position, which is why he lost it during wartime.
