Let's not forget that many countries are pouring money and supplies into Ukraine. Keeping up with this is already draining Russia, especially when one adds in the ever growing economic sanctions. Russia had to withdraw from Afghanistan, which put it under far less pressure. There's also, albeit a small one, the possibility that regions who want out of Putin's evil empire might now seize this opportunity while Russia has it's hands full. God knows there's never likely to be a better time to make a bid for freedom. Also, Russia is currently in no position to support The Fat Dictator in Belarus, if the people there decide to throw off their shackles.
