  1. One thing that's not mentioned is the rampant ageism that occurs in the country, and this sets in well before retirement age. It's illegal, but unlike racism and misogynism the governments and courts turn a blind eye to it. A classic example is in teaching. When I was on an IMO training camp in New Zealand I saw retired university profs in their 80s giving wonderful lessons to some of the country's very brightest. Go into a UK secondary school and see how many teachers you will find over 50. Their applications go straight in the bin. Even worse, sometimes "capability" is misused as an excuse to drive out older more expensive teachers.
