  2. Here's an old Russian tale: A genie appears to a man and tells him that he will grant him a wish, BUT whatever he gives him he will give twice as much to his neighbours. The man thinks for a few minutes and then says "pluck out one of my eyes".

  3. What the stupid and the envious never consider is how much it would cost to educate all those extra kids if most private schools close. Putting VAT on private education is likely to cost more money rather than bring any in. So, when Labour tells you they have costed all their spending be very, very cynical. Rather than putting on VAT, money could probably be saved by giving parents a tax rebate on school fees, so that a lot more choose private education!

  4. When I taught A-level, or it's equivalent, myself and most other teacher agreed that 15 in a class was the maximum size before kids' learning was significantly degraded. In many state schools it's getting on for twice that number!
