This is why Putin has made his ridiculous demands for a ceasefire. He is no longer able to hide from the Russian people that half a million of their young men have either been killed or crippled: and that lots more suffer the same fate every day. In order to avert a palace coup he urgently needs two things. He needs the Russian deaths to stop, and he needs to show substantial gains in return for the casualties he is already responsible for. Ukraine and the West would be absolutely insane to allow him to achieve either of these.
