  1. Just staying didn't work too well for the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, where they lost only a small fraction of the troops they have already lost in Ukraine. So this doesn't seem like much of a strategy. Also, ordering your generals to dilute their forces by defending a really long line, and then changing those orders to mount an all out attack seems to indicate an increasingly desperate Putin who really doesn't know what to do.
