  7. I had a Republican friend who was voting for Trump. I argued all the things wrong with Trump, and he said, “I agree, but what am I going to do, vote for Clinton?” Another friend, who I hung out with at Bernie events, used the same logic for voting for Clinton. It’s unfair to pigeonhole people’s identities when there are only 2 choices and most people don’t really like either one.

  8. If anything, this shows which party is more duped by culture wars. This might explain why a populist was able to succeed in the Republican primary, while the Democratic voters fall in line when confronted with the potential of losing to an R.

  10. The problem with D and R tribalism is that it doesn’t account for those people who are only 1 or 2 issue voters. It piles the entirety of the rhetorical baggage onto them. That makes them feel judged unfairly. Reducing people to labels isn’t healthy for any kind of relationship.
