  1. War and Peace is a meandering mess because its author got paid by the word. Having ultra-long serialized books was the same strategy back then that is today being used by daytime tv to keep people hooked to the ads for decades.

  2.  @RandoCommando24  Complexity is not the sign of great art. Art is entertainment. Of course War and Peace was good entertainment for its time. I would never argue with that. So are Beethoven's Sonatas for people who didn't have radio and tv but who had access to a piano. That entertainment, however, can quickly turn to torture if you force it on people who are used to different forms of entertainment and who don't suffer from boredom. If something is no fun any longer, then that's just a fact of life. So, no, art is not timeless. It lives in and dies with its own time. If you don't believe me... then I have a museum full of religious paintings in Milan for you. It's a large three or four floor building with nothing else than picture of Madonna, little Jesus and Jesus on and off the cross for you. Go there and let's see if you really find that enjoyable. They are all medieval masterpieces. No doubt about that. I have seen it and I will rather watch Madonna's "Cherish" video a hundred times in a row than see it again. The mermaids are hilarious. ;-)
