100 years ago, China was like India: poor and backward. Despite being hailed as the first democracy in Asia and the world's largest democracy, these titles did not change anything for China. Instead, China was bullied by Western powers and invaded by Japan. The most advanced intellectuals in China at the time, represented by Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and others, came to realize that Western-style 'democracy' would never work for China. They saw the path of Russia's 1917 revolution as the only way for China's future. They fought for it and founded the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949.
