The real reason for Sri Lanka's bankruptcy is not the so-called "China trap," but rather the stupidity of the former government influenced by the West, attempting to implement something entirely unrealistic for Sri Lanka: the notorious "No Chemical Agriculture" policy. The government prohibited farmers from using pesticides and fertilizers for rice cultivation, which completely devastated the country's grain production. In a tropical country where three harvests a year are possible, they failed to produce enough grain for themselves and had to spend a huge amount of foreign currency to buy from other countries, all of which produced using chemicals.
