Gorbachev was president at the time, and he said there was no such promise. Besides, it is not NATO that is looking to the east, it is Eastern Europe that is seeking NATO protection from an increasingly aggressive neighbor.

It's a ridiculous claim! In what way are NATO being humiliated? By sending weapons to a country that has the right to defend itself? I don't know if you have noticed, but there are some evil idiots who have invaded the country and are causing chaos, death and panic among the population. Absolutely no country on earth would have gone through an election in such a situation. Every normal human being understand that! (and yes, he would have won easily, but this is NOT Russia. Ukraine want to do this the right way)

@savanthsunnyt Unnecessary to bring up WW2, but Soviet attacked Poland in 1939. They had an agreement with Hitler to divide Europe among themselves. Hitler the West and Stalin the East. It would have been unnecessary for the US to meddle if Russia hadn't put their finger in Ukraine. If Russia stayed at home, everything would be fine. But it does not fit into Putin's plans to restore the Soviet Union.
