Nothing to do with US needs. The grain deal is about shipping out badly needed food to primarily Africa and other nations in need.

@pascalango497 "The war between Russia and Ukraine has highlighted how much of the world’s wheat supply relies on these two countries. For instance, a recently released UN report shows a sample of 25 African countries that rely on wheat imports from Russia or Ukraine. Of this group, 21 import most of their wheat from Russia. Between 2018 and 2020, Africa imported US$3.7 billion in wheat (32% of the continent’s total wheat imports) from Russia and another US$1.4 billion from Ukraine (12% of the continent’s wheat imports). Egypt imports nearly 80 % of their wheat. It’s crucial that African countries diversify their wheat sources for two key reasons. First, wheat forms an important component of diets. Not having enough brings the threat of hunger and political instability. "

@pascalango497 Press Release: Black Sea Grain Deal expiration on March 18 puts more than 40 million lives at risk in East Africa, warns the IRC . Millions of people are facing extreme hunger and drought in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. The continued uncertainty of grain shipments from the Black Sea has contributed to the situation. Somalia is nearly completely dependent on grain from Ukraine: the country receives 90% of its grain from Ukraine. Food price inflation is currently double in the countries most at risk of humanitarian catastrophe this year (nearly 40%) compared to an 18% food inflation rate in the rest of the world.

@pascalango497 The Ukrainian grain exports deal, which could collapse within weeks, is critical for millions of people in the Horn of Africa, where some are already starving, the United Nations said Monday. If it collapses, it would "absolutely hit eastern Africa very, very hard," said Dominique Ferretti, the U.N. World Food Program's senior emergency officer in the region.
