Stalin and Hitler had a pact to divide Europe between them. Hitler was to get the West and Russia/Soviet the East. Together they invaded Poland. Then the russians invaded other East European countries too. Only when Hitler chose to attack Russia was this pact broken. Then Stalin begged the US and the UK for help. And they got that. Thousands of tons with equipment, including tanks and planes were shipped to Russia. Over a hundred ships and thousands of sailors lost their lives to help the Russians. As thanks, they gained occupation of large parts of Eastern Europe.
