@espendu6955 just because it’s named after China doesn’t mean it’s Chinese territory. India doesn’t claim the Indian Ocean. The Irish Sea doesn’t belong to Ireland and the French would take exception if England stole the English Channel….

@syyin1885 so China thinks it can lay claim to waters due to the fact that hundreds of years ago a few Chinese fishermen fished there? For centuries fishermen from all over the world fished in international waters. It doesn't make those waters belong to the nationality of the fishermen. NB the Philippines have been inhabited for 709,000 years, long before China existed and I'm sure those inhabitants fished their own waters...

@syyin1885 Other countries have laid claim to the Spratly Islands as well, some before that of China in 1949. Those are far stronger claims than that of China. NB The Philippines did exist before 1949, irrespective as to who was controlling them at the time.

@trueanimalfan agreed the area is disputed, which is why China’s attitude to the region is presumptive.
