  2. It use to be that protecting the secrets of the craft of professional stone cutters was the reason Freemasonry began. Is the craft of some sort of secret stone cutting still part of it? I ask because I saw a remarkable PBS documentary on the restoration progress going on at Notre Dame Cathedral. Even the carpentry side of carving wood to fit inside the buttresses to prevent them from caving in while restoration was going on just blew my mind. Then the stone cutters who searched for the exact replacements for the old stones that were damaged. Incredibly detailed restorations. And you wouldn't believe how close Notre Dame could have come to be destroyed forever. The stain glass workers were incredible too. Looked like all women.

  4. The Freemasons in England once gave a banquet in honor of Charles Dickens. On the walls around the banquet hall were the large printed names of Dickens's novels., in GOLD. It was reported that Charles was "visibly shaken" at seeing that and the thunderous applause when he entered the hall. Must have been quite the evening. Women were confined to the balconies. The Freemasons asked Charles to join, but he declined. I guess he already had a lot to do. I bet even the Freemasons here don't know about this banquet.
