  1. Just like the Wrangler and Bronco, the Toyota Prado version often has the spare tire mounted on the tailgate. That's the reason it opens to the side rather than upwards.

Don't forget, when they name you to the Toyota Motor Corporation Board of Directors, we want the GX's little brother 2 door Prado in this market. In the Prado, the side opening tailgate often has a spare tire mounted to it which allows for auxiliary fuel capacity for serious trekking. 🙂

  3. They often mount the spare tire on the door with the Prado, that is the reason it swings open instead of lifting open. The Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco have the same type of door for the same reason and the American SUVs open in the same direction. This strongly suggests it is not a problem for the intended customers.

  6. I feel your pain! AMD has promised us that when he is named to the Toyota Board of Directors his first act will be to send the Prado with the good old 2.7 engine to the US and Canada. My Prado will be the 2 door with a manual transmission and naturally, the spare will be mounted on the tailgate. Even a man of AMD's stature will find it difficult to get the Diesel to meet EPA requirements. The order book is filling fast, which model do you want?

  27. Type the words Toyota Prado in the Search box. Many or most of them have the spare tire mounted on the tailgate which allows for additional fuel capacity where the spare is using up precious space under the Lexus GX version.
