  1. Yes, Zaitsev got his first kills with regular non-scoped Mosin-Nagant . He got his scoped rifle later. This was actually accurately described in "Enemy at the gates" , few such moments in the film.

  2.  @RotgerValdes  Correct, and whole "sniper movement" was not started by people armed with scoped rifles. They as a rule had just simple "three-line" Mosin -Nagant.
