Russia shall highly likely, almost certainly keep a presence in Syria, but it can be reduced down to just the the two bases and not overly exposed outside of them.

Just think, Turkish F-16's and Russian Air force Su-30 could soon be operating from same airfield in Syria. Joint patrols.

UK could hardly cope in Basra (Iraq) and Helmand (Afghanistan) provinces without considerable U.S. support/help and the air operations over Libya revealed an air force that has lost all serious capability for anything but interceptions over the skies over the UK mainland. Russia meanwhile is winning out in the greatest land battles and war, since WW2 in Europe, against the proxy forces backed 'to the hilt' by Washington/London/Brussels led Fourth Reich.

@czogg99 They (Russian military) could only have saved Assad if the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) had wanted to fight, Russia never had much of a ground forces presence in Syria. All the indications though were that Assad didn't want to fight, but to retire out of the country with his family. (his wife had been fighting cancer illness)

Maybe Russia might jointly operate the bases with HTS and help provide the new Syrian govt with a new modern navy and air force?

They've just won both conflicts. Resisting temptation in Syria further adds to the four years of abject failure of the Biden regime. Humiliation is a good word for the exit of the deposed, angry old man.

Russia is not withdrawing troops from its two main bases in Syria – Tartus and Khmeimim, but is redeploying from other facilities. Russian troops are leaving the north of the country and some checkpoints in the mountains of Aleppo and other regions. This was stated by the Reuters agency, citing several Syrian military and intelligence officers. Russia is not withdrawing its two main bases and currently has no intention of doing so. - said one of the sources. They claim that Russian units, along with heavy equipment, are being pulled into the territory of Tartus and Khmeimim. Some officers of the Syrian government forces are also being evacuated there. According to officials, the goal of the Russian command is to regroup taking into account the situation on the ground. And a representative of one of the armed groups that seized power told American journalists that the new authorities are not yet discussing with the Russians the future of the agreements on bases concluded by the previous Syrian government with Moscow. But at the same time, Russia has established contacts with opposition forces and is preparing to hold future talks on preserving two military facilities. The agency's Russian source also confirmed that such negotiations are underway. He also stated that the evacuation of Russian troops from Khmeimim and Tartus is not planned in the near future. Thus, the Russian Armed Forces are not planning to leave Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad.
