The Total Defense Act is a law that has existed in Sweden since 1961 and aims to protect the country and its population in the event of war or other emergency situations. But despite the fact that the law has existed for over 50 years, it is high time it was abolished. First, the law itself is undemocratic. It gives the state authority strong powers to control and direct the population in the event of a crisis, without having to take into account the rights and freedoms of the individual. Moreover, it is a law that was created in a different time, when the threat of war and enemy countries was more tangible. Today, the threat picture is different and the Total Defense Act is no longer relevant. It is also a law that gives the state authority the opportunity to act without transparency or control from other democratic bodies. This is not sustainable in a modern democracy. Furthermore, the Total Defense Act gives the state the opportunity to take over and control individual companies and their production in the event of a crisis. This can lead to major financial consequences for both companies and society as a whole. Instead of giving the state such powers, one should instead invest in strengthening cooperation between different actors, such as companies, voluntary organizations and civil society, in order to better handle crises. It is also important to invest in preventive measures to reduce the risk of crises and strengthen society's vulnerability. In other words, the Total Defense Act is an outdated and undemocratic law that should be abolished and replaced with more modern and democratic solutions to protect the country and its population in the event of a crisis. It is high time that Sweden adapts to the threat picture of modern times and removes a law that is no longer relevant and that goes against basic democratic principles.
