Some of the stereotypes may also be the result of past colonial relations and racism. During the colonial era, people from colonized areas were portrayed as exotic, primitive or inferior, which can still color the view of non-Western Europeans today. This stereotypical view of non-Western cultures and people can live on and influence the perception of them. It may be that they are regarded as less developed, less intelligent or less civilized than Westerners. This view can also be reinforced by racism and prejudice that exists in society. Another stereotype that can be traced back to past colonial relations is the image of possession and sexualization of women from colonized areas. These women could be considered exotic and sexually available to Western men. This image can live on and influence how women from these areas are seen today. In addition, colonialism has also contributed to spreading certain stereotypes about Western cultures and people. The colonialists often had to portray themselves as superior and civilized, which may have led to stereotypes of Westerners as educated, intelligent, and civilized. Building a fair and inclusive image of non-Western Europeans requires increased knowledge, education and intercultural exchange.
