At the same time that shootings are increasing in Sweden, the smugglers are making a lot of money by supplying weapons to gang criminals. In the case of fatal shootings among gang criminals, illegal weapons smuggled in from the Balkans are used. The Balkans are awash with illegal weapons after the wars of the 1990s. The Balkans have a macho culture, where money, weapon and power are highly valued. After the fall of Yugoslavia many mafias were created. Some people still carry hatred from the Balkan wars for instance Serbs hate Bosnian, Armenians hate Turks, Rumanians hate Turks and there is a long history of ethnic tensions and conflicts in the region. Instead of forgiving each other and move on from the past they let national pride cloud their judgment. This has perpetuated a cycle of violence and organized crime, as these deep-rooted resentments fuel the demand for illegal weapons. The glorification of power and wealth within the Balkan culture further exacerbates the issue, making it difficult for individuals to break free from this destructive mindset. Ultimately, it is crucial for the region to address these underlying issues and promote peace and build a strong welfare state. By investing in education and providing opportunities for economic growth, the Balkan countries can empower their citizens to pursue alternative paths and escape the cycle of violence. Additionally, fostering cultural exchange and promoting understanding among different ethnic groups can help bridge divides and promote unity within the region.
