British rule in Iraq did contribute to poverty in the country, as it led to economic exploitation, uneven development, and social dislocation. The British imposed policies that favored their own interests and the interests of a small elite, while neglecting the economic needs of the wider population. Saddam Hussein's family was not necessarily poor, as he came from a relatively well-off family in Tikrit. However, in his early years, Saddam's father, who was a farmer, had financial difficulties, which may have influenced Saddam's later actions and desire for power and wealth. Saddam rose to power through opportunism and ruthless tactics, rather than as a result of poverty.
