I developed tinnitus several years ago, not long after a really bad bout of ‘flu. I love silence but, sadly, I’ll never hear it again. Along with the tinnitus came hyperacusis. Any loud, high-pitched noise, especially a sudden one, causes me physical pain. Emergency vehicle sirens, a child screaming because s/he wants something, a passing idiot barking into their mobile phone, young women screeching at each other…
