The druggie brother of a good friend, whose family originated in what is today called The Arab Emirates, told her that they were going to Pakistan because he’d arranged for her to marry his dealer. I offered her sanctuary and support to go to the police, but she was terrified that’d get my family murdered along with her own. Upshot was: she mysteriously drowned in a local canal, and he fled to Pakistan, never to be seen or heard of again. Her parents were devastated. At that time, we were both aged 16.

  34. We are training a lot of young people to enter the care sector. Unfortunately, the poor lambs seem completely unaware of how corrupt the sector has become over the last thirty years. Did you know that some care home groups require the applicant to pay them to complete a DBS check even though they hold one already? It’s a huge scam since only one person - or no person (I’ve heard of that happening) - gets the job. Taking on unskilled foreign workers is just another lucrative ploy.

  41. At least thirty years ago, I was involved in a situation where a third party was offended by a slightly naughty joke they’d overheard. In fact, it turned out that the third party was offended that the second party was not offended by the first party. This was the height of Old Political Correctness, but the third party got short shrift and, subsequently, resigned in a huff. I’m looking forward to the day we can once again advise other mean little bullying tattletales to go forth at their leisure.
